Belt System Configuration
Set up and manage belt ranking systems for different martial arts and age groups
1. Overview
Belt systems are the foundation of student progression in DojoMaster. They define the ranking structure for your martial arts school, including belt colors, progression order, and requirements for advancement. Each belt system is specific to a martial art and age group, allowing you to customize progression paths for different student demographics.
Key Concepts
- Belt System: A complete ranking structure for a specific martial art and age group
- Belt Rank: Individual belt level within a system (e.g., White Belt, Yellow Belt)
- Age Groups: JUNIOR (under 13), TEEN (13-17), ADULT (18-59), SENIOR (60+), ALL (all ages)
- Martial Arts: Karate, Taekwondo, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Kung Fu, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, MMA, Aikido, Kendo, and more
- Requirements: Minimum age, training days, required skills, and stripe requirements for each belt
2. Prerequisites
Before configuring your belt system, ensure you have:
- ✓Admin or Sensei role in your club
- ✓Clear understanding of your martial art's belt progression system
- ✓Defined requirements for each belt rank (age, training time, skills)
- ✓Access to Settings → Belt System section in your dashboard
3. Creating a Belt System
DojoMaster offers both predefined belt systems and custom configuration options.
Option A: Use a Predefined Belt System
DojoMaster includes predefined belt systems for common martial arts:
- 1.Navigate to Settings → Belt System
- 2.Click "Add Belt Rank" or "Configure Belt System"
- 3.Choose from predefined systems:
- • Traditional Karate - White to Black (6 belts)
- • WTF Taekwondo - White to Black with Gup ranks (6 belts)
- • IBJJF Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - White to Black (5 belts, Adult only)
- 4.Click "Save" to apply the predefined system to your club
Option B: Create a Custom Belt System
For custom belt systems or martial arts not included in predefined options:
- 1.Navigate to Settings → Belt System
- 2.Click "Add Belt Rank" to add individual belts
- 3.For each belt rank, provide:
- • Belt Name (e.g., "White Belt", "Yellow Belt")
- • Belt Color (White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, Red, Black, or Custom)
- • Order/Rank (progression sequence, starting from 0)
- • Description (optional, e.g., "Beginner level")
- 4.Repeat for all belt ranks in your system
Pro Tip
Start with a predefined system and customize it later. You can always add, edit, or remove belt ranks after initial setup.
4. Adding Belt Ranks
Each belt rank can have specific requirements and properties:
Basic Properties
Belt Name
The display name for the belt rank (2-50 characters). Examples: "White Belt", "Yellow Belt with Stripe", "1st Dan Black Belt"
Belt Color
Choose from standard colors (White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, Red, Black) or select "Custom" to define your own color.
Rank Order
Numerical order in the progression sequence (0 = first belt, 1 = second belt, etc.). This determines the belt hierarchy and grading eligibility.
Requirements (Optional)
Minimum Age
The minimum age required to achieve this belt rank (4-100 years). Useful for age-restricted belts like adult black belts.
Minimum Training Days
The minimum number of training days required before a student can grade for this belt. DojoMaster automatically tracks attendance to calculate eligibility.
Required Skills
Specific techniques or skills students must demonstrate for this belt. These are tracked during grading events and student progress assessments.
Stripe Requirements
Required stripes/themes students must earn before grading for this belt. See the Stripe/Theme System Guide for more details.
5. Managing Multiple Belt Systems
DojoMaster supports multiple belt systems for clubs that teach different martial arts or have separate programs for different age groups.
When to Use Multiple Systems
- •Different Martial Arts: Separate systems for Karate, Taekwondo, Jiu-Jitsu, etc.
- •Age-Specific Programs: Junior belt system (simplified) vs. Adult belt system (traditional)
- •Different Styles: Traditional vs. Sport-focused belt progressions
Important
Each student can only be assigned to one belt system at a time. Make sure to assign students to the correct belt system based on their program.
6. Common Pitfalls & Troubleshooting
❌ Incorrect Rank Order
Problem: Belt ranks are not in the correct progression order.
Solution: Ensure rank numbers are sequential (0, 1, 2, 3...) with no gaps. The lowest rank should be 0 (typically White Belt).
❌ Students Can't Grade
Problem: Students are not showing as eligible for grading.
Solution: Check that students have met all requirements: minimum age, minimum training days, required skills, and stripe requirements. Review the Grading Events Guide for eligibility details.
❌ Wrong Belt System Assigned
Problem: Students are assigned to the wrong belt system (e.g., Junior students in Adult system).
Solution: Update student profiles to assign them to the correct belt system. Go to Students → [Student Name] → Edit → Belt System.
❌ Can't Delete Belt Rank
Problem: Unable to delete a belt rank that's no longer needed.
Solution: Belt ranks cannot be deleted if students are currently assigned to them. First, reassign or remove students from that belt rank, then delete it.
